About Lumen & Room

Last updated: January 15, 2026

Lumen & Room is an independent editorial resource about residential lighting and the role it plays in how a home functions day to day. We focus on one specific, often-overlooked part of organizing a home well: making sure every room has the right light, in the right place, for what actually happens there.

What we do

We publish practical, room-by-room and topic-by-topic guides that explain how lighting works — lumens, watts, color temperature, color rendering, and the ambient/task/accent layering model — and how to apply that understanding to real rooms: living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices, and the smaller, awkward spaces that most lighting advice ignores, like closets, hallways, and low-ceilinged rooms. Alongside the guides, we built a lighting planner that turns a room's dimensions, natural light, and intended use into a general estimate of how much light it needs and how to split that light across layers.

Who this is for

We write for homeowners making a one-room-at-a-time improvement, renters who need solutions that do not require touching a wall or a wiring box, and remote workers trying to make a home office more comfortable for long days in front of a screen. None of our content assumes a background in electrical work or lighting design — we explain things from first principles and link back to foundational concepts whenever a guide builds on them.

What we are not

We are not electricians, and nothing on this site is a substitute for one. We do not sell lighting products, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any lighting manufacturer or retailer. Our lighting planner produces general estimates intended to help you plan and shop with more confidence — it is not a professional lighting design, a code compliance check, or an electrical assessment of your home. Guides that touch on anything beyond swapping a bulb or plugging in a fixture consistently point readers toward a licensed electrician for permanent or wiring-related work.

How we work

Our editorial approach, including how we handle sources and claims, is explained in full on our Editorial Policy and Sources and Methodology pages. If you believe something on the site is inaccurate or out of date, our Corrections page explains how to reach us and what happens next.
